Welcome to my portfolio!

The purpose of this website is to introduce you to a sampling of the kind of work that I have done as a student of Landscape Design.

European Religion History Tour

At the beginning of the fall semester I toured Europe with the Brigham Young University-Idaho Religion Department. During the tour we visited numerous church's and other religious sites, but I was also able to observe the local horticulture practices and landscape architecture, whose design techniques were incredible!

During our time overseas we visited Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, France and England. It was interesting to see the different cultures - how the people interacted and how they designed their buildings and green spaces accordingly.

The slide show below includes a few of my better scenic and landscape photos.

Summer 2008 Internship

I spent this summer in Chicago as a Maintenance Sales Intern with Mariani Landscape. Mariani Landscape is an elite Design/Build/Maintain firm with work focused on the North Shore of Chicago. I was attached to a Client Representative, and we headed up 'Team Lemburg' overseeing every aspect of the Landscape Maintenance work for 65 residential properties.

I also job shadowed several key members of the Design/Build team to experience the diverse areas of the corporation. These positions included: Project Director, Project Manager and Production Coordinator.

I enjoyed the type of work that Mariani Landscape has built a reputation for: exclusive properties, large budgets and clients with high expectations.

The slide show below previews the caliber of work that Mariani Landscape has established a reputation for delivering.

Summer 2007 Internship

During the summer of 2007 I completed a 17 week internship with Bob Jackson Landscapes in Baltimore, Maryland. Bob Jackson is a renowned Design/Build/Maintain firm in the greater Baltimore-Washington area. During my 5 week rotations I established my passion for quality workmanship while having first hand experience in each of the design, installation, and maintenance divisions.

My highlights included: surveying large jobs using a multi station transit, participating in the design process with two design teams, installing 22' Austrian pine trees, manager shadowing, designing for maintenance clients, and being involved in weekly crew training meetings.

School Work

Below is a sampling of the work that I have done while a Design / Build student at Brigham Young University - Idaho.

Suzhou Design

The above design is the DynaSCAPE file of a project I completed in my Advanced Design class. The client wanted a relaxed experience in their yard, and my professor required several principles to be included, such as: a reflected scenery, borrowed scenery's, leaking through scenery's, etc. With the amount of plant material I used, this plan looks busy, but there was so much to accomplish in a small space that it was necessary.

Above I used DynaSCAPE Color for my presentation plan. The plan was simplified when the masses of planting came together, simplifying the overall appearance. It also helped to create an all around appealing design.

DynaSCAPE Color is a relatively new program and I have just recently started to use it. I wasn't sure if I liked the end product it produced, but after this design I was sold. I like DynaSCAPE Color because you can achieve a bright, clean appearance in your rendering that I couldn't have achieved with markers or pencils.

Speed Design

In my advanced design class we did a speed design exercise. We had just under 2 hours to take a front yard design from inception to presentation. It was a good challenge for me to speed things up and not over think things. Below is the DynaSCAPE plan.

We used Dynascape Color for our presentation, my first time using the program.

Motor court Design

At BYU - Idaho we use Google SketchUp, a 3-D modeling program, as an aid to clients as to what we are trying to achieve in our designs. I have found that using this software to be very effective in helping people buy my designs.

In my advanced design class, we were assigned a motor court problem. Below are two screen shots from SketchUp from different angles of the property.

Click any of the plans to view full screen.
With SketchUp, there are several options of how you would like to view the presentation. The above screen shot is the same view of the color shot on top, but this is a classic sketchy line style.

Again, the above shot is a loose charcoal line style of the same shot in color.

Motor court Design Video

Another fun feature of StetchUp is that you can create a 'fly through' animation of your design. Below is the animation of my motor court design.

To watch animation, click on the play icon on the bottom left of design.

Compact sideyard Design

In this design, I had the challenge to create a space that had several uses with the limited 25 x 25' space. A hot tub, fire pit and child-safe water feature are all included in the design.

SketchUP assists those who struggle with visualizing to understand what you are trying to achieve with your design. When I showed the client this SketchUp model animation they said: 'We love it, when can you come put it in?'

Balinese Design

For my Construction Materials class I worked with an assigned team to design this small space for a couple that wanted to transform their yard with a taste of Bahli. We researched what the natural Bali landscape looks like, and tried to mimic this in the design.

We brainstormed on trace paper, then put those ideas into Dynascape. The above design, as it looked when we finished the design in Dynascape.

Above, the design after I rendered it. We also made a large story board with all of the materials we were proposing, and we presented the project to the couple in a sales scenario.

Rear Yard Design

In my construction materials class, I designed an informal rear yard with a broken glass patio and water feature, including a section drawing. The base map & patio were created in DynaSCAPE design. I hand drafted and rendered the remainder of the design.

Introductory Design Final Front Yard

The above plan was my final project in my Introduction to Landscpae Design class. A 45 degree design hand drawn and rendered. My drafting and rendering skills have improved since I took this class two years ago.

Bob Jackson Landscapes Hand Drafting & Rendering

All of Bob Jackson Landscapes plans are hand drafted onto a CADD base map.

Above is one of two planting plan options for the rear yard that I drafted, along with three planting plan options for the front yard.
